NJ Transit has received more than $46.3 million in federal funds to buy 84 CNG buses. The new buses are scheduled to arrive within two years. The buses will be housed at the only NJ Transit garage with CNG fueling. From there, they will service passengers to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. The 84 new CNG buses would more than double the existing CNG fleet of 76 buses. NJ Transit estimates that CNG costs only 36 cents per mile compared to diesel fuel at 76 cents per mile. Switching 84 diesel buses to CNG would save nearly $1.5 million per year in fuel costs.
